The Woman of Achievement and Young Woman of Achievement awards recognise women in the community who strive to make a difference through their involvement in business or professional achievements, personal achievements, and community activities, with winners being presented at the IWD dinner at Buchanan Park on Saturday March 6.
International Women's Day committee chairperson Sue Wicks said Zonta Club of Mount Isa hosted this event each year to recognise women in the Mount Isa region who have achieved great things.
"We have the two award categories and nominations will open on February 1 and close February 19. Nominations can be made by anyone in the public if they know a woman or young woman who needs recognition for their local achievements," Ms Wicks said.
"We usually see about six nominations for each category but the largest intake we have received was 14 nominations for the young woman of achievement.
"Zonta hosts this event each year to recognise that issues relating to women may be improving over the years but they still exist, so women still have challenges when it comes to glass ceiling or accessing education in various parts of the world."
Ms Wicks said they had also secured their guest speaker retired Major Matina Jewell.
"We are excited to bring an inspirational or motivating guest speaker to the community who we may not usually have access to," she said.
"Matina grew up in the hinterland of Byron Bay and joined the Army at age 17. During her 15 year military career Matina has:
- Served on five missions and earned eight war medals
- Is the only Australian to receive two Republic of Lebanon war medals for acts of bravery on the battlefield and being wounded in combat
- Completed the physically demanding Navy divers' course
- Served with American Navy Seals
- Tracked-down war lords in the Solomon Islands
- Fast-roped from helicopters and boarded smuggler ships in the Arabian Gulf, and
- Was posted as a peacekeeper with the United Nations in Syria and Lebanon.
"Medically retired, Matina served on the Prime Ministerial Advisory Council and continues to champion change for our injured war veterans.
"Among her many honorary roles, Matina is a founding ambassador for Project Thankful, a movement partnered with the United Nations to help empower women and children globally."
Ms Wicks said tickets would cost $95 for dinner, guest speaker and entertainment.
"Ticket numbers will be restricted due to COVID-19 and go on sale on February 15," she said.
"Bookings will be made electronically through TryBooking.com."
