Three representatives from MIANA travelled to Brisbane on March 20 for the annual Queensland Netball Conference and Awards, where they were listed as a finalist in the 2020 Community Organisation of the Year (over 500).
MIANA treasurer Barbara Baker said they won the award over other nominees Caloundra Netball Association and Mackay Netball Association.
"We were fortunate enough to take out the final prize in which we took away a certificate, trophy and recognition of the award," Ms Baker said.
"We were totally surprised with the nomination let alone winning the award on the night. Standing there when we were announced as the winner, was very emotional, exciting and overwhelming.
"Nominations were anonymous, so we have no information about the nomination, who nominated us or why. However there was a criteria that needed to be met for the nomination to be accepted."
Ms Baker has been with MIANA since 1995 and said they had not won an award like this before.
"I have not been aware that we have been nominated for anything like this before. This is a big thing for us," she said.
"Given our distance from coastal communities and impact of COVID-19 last year, we have still been able to provide our members with more opportunities including two local competitions, development training and pathways.
"We host a normal competition and a mixed competition throughout the year. This year we have 45 teams in the normal comp which is the biggest competition in our history that I can recall, and we had 30 teams in our 2019 mixed comp which is increasing each year."
