The festival addresses a financial need of community sports clubs with the Australian Sports Foundation reporting late last year that a quarter of all sports clubs in Queensland would run out of money due to the pandemic.
The Overlander's Way Festival of Sport is a collaboration between the North Queensland Sports Foundation, councils from towns along the Overlander's Way, regional and state sporting bodies, and community sports clubs, sponsored by Glencore.
The festival will assemble a range of resources from regional and state sporting bodies to support community sports clubs delivering programs from June to September 2021 to address community engagement, participation and upskilling volunteers.
The Regional Active Clubs Hub will bring together many online resources providing easy access for club committees to connect.
The hub initiative will support the development of the capacities of community sports clubs and build a stronger sport and recreation community into the future.
The NQSF will deliver a capacity building roadshow beginning June 14 which will meet with community clubs and councils in towns along the Overlander's Way over four days. Topics will include governance, organisational support, funding opportunities, and grant writing.
NQSF CEO Stephen Farrell said the Festival of Sport was a systematic, coordinated approach designed to support the capacities of regional sport and active recreation communities.
The program of events and capacity building sessions will be available over the coming weeks.
Glencore's Rob Blyth said they had been a long-term sponsor of the Great Western Games held every two years.
"Instead of the Games this year, we're sponsoring the Glencore Overlander's Way Festival of Sport, as a way to fast-track recovery and get North West Queensland back into sport, following last year's slow-down during the COVID-19 pandemic," Mr Blyth said.
"The Festival includes workshops on participation and volunteerism. It brings the overarching sporting bodies to the region to help build internal capacity of local sporting clubs."
