Mount Isa City Council's plan to install smart meters is set to gain momentum with an item on the agenda at Wednesday's ordinary meeting of council.

Mount Isa City Council invited tenders for the provision of an Advanced Metering Infrastructure System (smart meters) for all of its 7200 water meters and the tender included the replacement of all existing 20 and 25mm meters, a dedicated communication network to support remote reading, a meter management system to collect, store and manage the data that is retrieved, and a customer web portal.
Now Council's manager of water and sewerage is recommending Council award a contract to Suez Water Pty Ltd, for $2.9m to provide those services.
Suez is a global environmental management group and its Australian arm manages water and waste services in Cairns and Mackay among other places.
The council motion also calls for an additional $250,000 to the project in the 2021/22 budget.
The rollout of the smart water meters at Mount Isa properties is anticipated to begin in mid-2021.
There is also a recommendation for Council to award a contract for the laying of asphalt at several location to Fulton Hogan Industries for $482,079.53 while council officers recommends the contract for Council's annual road resealing program of almost 60,000 sq m be given to Koppen Constructions for $388,170.09.
There is also a recommendation for Council to approve sponsorship of $60,000 to be a "Presenting Partner" of the 2021 Isa Rodeo.
Wednesday's council meeting will also hear an update on the RFDS aeroplane monument at George McCoy Park.
The aeroplane is in poor condition and a public consultation meeting heard whether it should be repaired or donated to the John Flynn Place museum in Cloncurry.
