MOUNT Isa Parish priest Mick Lowcock seems unworried that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, which is “in the hands of the surgeon and the hands of God”.

He said he felt lucky he had learned of it early.
“I’m not particularly worried – I think they got it early.”
If the nodule was not removed, Father Lowcock would have an expected lifespan of 10 years, but according to medical advice, his lifespan would be longer.
Father Lowcock had a regular check-up with the general practitioner while on holiday in Brisbane last month which revealed a small nodule of prostate cancer.
He will have it removed next month when he returns to Brisbane.
Father Lowcock said community members were shocked to learn the news because he looked healthy – and he was.
Parishioners were also concerned because they drew parallels to the death of Townsville Bishop Michael Putney, who died of stomach cancer March last year, Father Lowcock said. But his cancer was a different stage and type to the Bishop’s.
Father Lowcock was already involved in the North West Queensland Prostate Cancer Group as part of his religious duties, and attended monthly meetings.
He acknowledged it was a bitter-sweet experience.
