The city is gearing up for its annual influx of tourists, and tourism operators want visitors to stay in Mount Isa for longer.
Outback at Isa tourism manager Kylie Rixon said preparations were well under way to attract more visitors to the city and keep them longer.
“Our aim is to generate interest not only at Outback at Isa but in Mount Isa as a whole,” she said.
“We want to create a place where tourists stay longer than a day.”
“We expect tourism to pick up after the Easter holidays, last year was a good season and we want to improve it again this year. Word of mouth is key and we want to give them something to talk about.”
Mount Isa tourism business owners went underground at Hard Time Mine recently in an effort to swap ideas and network before the busy tourism season kicked off.
The beer, wine and pizza night was attended by Moondarra Caravan Park, Sunset Tourist Park, Mount Isa Caravan Park and other organisations like Coates Hire and Bus Queensland.
“We all benefit from tourism and the more that we can work together and establish that network, the more it will be to everyone’s benefit,” Ms Rixon said.
“We want to network, put names to faces and throughout the busy season we all talk and hopefully this will enable a better relationship to work together.”
Ms Rixon said Outback at Isa would increase its advertising this year to help spread the word about its business and the city. “We have increased our advertising to various other avenues and trying to promote our Hard Times Mine especially,” she said.
“We are looking at the potential of doing free events, such as poetry reading, Devonshire teas and historical presentations.”
