Rainfall benefits landholders

Yelvertoft station owner, Marcus Curr, said he received 90mm over the holiday season.

“We also have two properties at Julia Creek, Wensley and Yorkshire Downs, that received 200mm,” Mr Curr said.

“We are very happy with the rain we have received, all the dams are full and there is very good grass around.

“No one in our area is disappointed by the rain we have received but it wouldn’t hurt to get some more. It has been a good start.”

Urandangi business owner of the Dangi Bush Resort, Pam Forster, said they recorded 70mm from December 21.

“We are happy with the rain we have received but we would like more, we need a lot more surface rain,” Ms Forster said.

“Farmers in the area also need more follow up rain.”

The Georgina River continues to run and drivers are unable to cross the flooded waters.

The river is currently running at 2.8 metres.

“Moonah Creek was up for the first couple of days but has since gone down, we are now able to cross safely.

“A lot of the water comes from Mount Isa and continues into the Georgina River.”

Split Rock Station owner, Anne Seymour, said she received 254mm in the last three weeks

“We are delighted with the amount of rain we have received. People can cheer when they have a white Christmas but we could cheer when we got a wet one.

“We couldn’t access the property road for five days but it didn’t affect us too much.

“The recent rain for some landholders would only be half of what they would need for the season.

“It was so great to have some widespread rain, not many landholders missed out. But it is only the start of the season, so hopefully it comes back.”
