Townsville’s Dempsey Currin, 18 and Moogerah’s Harry Mounsey, 24 were crowned the winners from 30 guys and 30 girls over two heats and the final.
Both winners received much support from the crowd, both wearing ladies’ sparkling denim jeans.
The ladies competition was tough, sending the crowd into a frenzy. There was a battle between the journalists with ABC’s Emma Cillekens and the North West Star’s new journalist Danaella Wivell. Emma made it to the top five while Danaella was knocked out early in the competition.
The men’s competition saw 2015 winner, Calum Fegan, exit the competition early alongside his brother Jessie who were two of the favourites to win the competition. Unfortunately for the brothers neither of them could sit their booties on the throne.
The Australia’s Best Butt Competition has been part of the Julia Creek Dirt n Dust Festival since 2004, which started as a way to fill the time during a blackout.
The event requires competitors to wear jeans and get their booties shaking in front of a 3500 strong crowd, with the winner determined by the butt that can elicit the loudest cheer from the audience.
Mr Mounsey said his time on the Australia’s Best Butt stage was a thrilling experience.
“I’m still a bit numb. I’m so excited to win I just don’t know what to do with myself,” Mr Mounsey said.
“I’ve been training all year. I’ve been doing squats and grabbing my ankles any time necessary. I’ve been working for it, I’m here and I’ve won it!”
Ms Currin said a solid crowd backing her was her secret to taking out the 2016 Australia’s Best Butt title.
“I think you have to have a really good support crew – they’re the ones who get you across the line.
“You have to be able to perform to a crowd of hundreds who stare shamelessly at your backside and cheer when it’s your turn to show off.”
While bragging rights are the only official prize that come with winning the Australia’s Best Butt Competition, both Mr Mounsey and Ms Currin expect to cash in on a few perks in the wake of winning their title.
“I think the women are going to come flocking, but with me that’s standard,” Mr Mounsey said.
“I’m going to live it up at work for a bit,” Ms Currin said.
“They’re all going to praise me for it and I’ll definitely make the most of it.”
