One of Mount Isa’s top tourist destinations is opening its doors a bit wider this Sunday, with an open day for locals and visitors.
From 8.30am to 12.30pm there will be an art exhibition, stalls, competitions, tours, and games for everyone in the community to partake in.
Customer Service Operator at Outback at Isa, Peita Harrison, says the open day is all about connecting with the locals.
“We just want to showcase our facility, and what we can offer for the locals so they can be proud of this facility,” Ms Harrison said.
“We are about tourism but we’re also about our local community,” she said.
“Last year we had over 1500 people through, and we’re expecting it to be bigger and better this year,” Ms Harrison said.
The Outback at Isa centre will be running free underground tours at the Hard Times Mine, as well as the Riversleigh Fossil Centre.
“We’ve got two trucks doing circles underground, so that’ll be a condensed version of the Hard Times Mine tour for people to experience,” Ms Harrison said.
Local artist Alan Mathieson is putting on a photography exhibition on the upper level, with work from the past five years.
“I’ve been taking photographs for five or six years and I really enjoy the technical aspect of cameras, and you can be creative with your post processing so it’s a nice combination which I enjoy,” Mr Mathieson said.
Mayor Joyce McCulloch will open the gallery at 10am for Mr Mathieson’s first major exhibition, which will run for the next three months.
Mr Mathieson will also be running competitions each month to win a limited edition acrylic print of your choice from the collection.
Open day activities also include competitions, games and puzzles for children, with many different prizes to be won.
Paul ‘the camel man’ will bring a couple of his finest camels, Nelly and Four X, to greet people who stop by.
Food stalls from the local community will surround the centre, offering snacks to sustain hungry punters.
MOB FM will be broadcasting live from the centre for open day.
Other groups on site will be Glencore, Mount Isa City Council, Paws Hoofs and Claws, and YPA.
Everyone attending will receive a goodie bag.
