The 2019 Mount Isa Sign On Expo takes place at the Buchanan Park exhibition centre on Saturday morning and there will be a smorgasbord of options for people looking for fun and healthy activities to do for the year ahead.
It will give locals a chance to meet many of Mount Isa’s clubs, community groups and sporting codes.
Cr Peta MacRae said Mount Isa City Councillor for Sports and Rec said will be something in the day for everyone and there will be plenty of options to choose from.
“Our numbers of exhibitors will be twice as big as it was last year,” Cr MacRae said.
“We are up to 66 (exhibitors) at the moment.”

The Expo will feature two food stalls and a chill-out coffee lounge area in the middle of the Entertainment Centre where people can sit down, relax over a cuppa and catch up with friends.
There will also be lots of great demonstrations and interactive activities, such as exercise classes from a local physio, displays from the Mount Isa School of Dance and Highland Dancers, sewing demonstrations from the Mount Isa Quilters Group, posture photos taken by a chiropractor, and Play-Doh and activity tables for the kids.
Cr MacRae said the purpose of the day was to provide residents with a one-stop shop for parents with a number of kids who play a number of sports.
“It’s hard to get around town and sign them up for everything,” she said.
“This allows parents to come in and sign them all up at the one place.”

There was another important purpose of the day as Cr MacRae explained.
“It is for people new to town who can find out what is going on and what we have on offer so we have opened it up to community groups that are looking for volunteers,” she said.
“It is important for new people to have the chance to get involved in the community.”
Cr MacRae said although many organisations found it hard to get volunteers Mount Isa had a high per capita rate of volunteers compared to other areas.
“That’s why we have the community groups (at the Expo) – people can find other things there if they are not particularly sporty,” she said.
“It is important for us to have people out there doing things.”
The day will also include the formal opening of the Glencore Great Western Games for 2019 which take place between June 22 and 29.
The formal opening will take place at 10am.
The sign on expo is on from 9am to 1pm Saturday, February 2.
