Hughenden Bulls win Event of the Year in Australia Day awards

The club won the gong for hosting the Intrust Super Cup "Get in the Game" Country Week clash between Townsville Blackhawks and Tweed Heads Seagulls last year. 

The Blackhawks beat the Seagulls 62-12 at Flinders Sports Ground during the Round 19 game, in front of hundreds of passionate punters.

Bulls president, Victoria Horton, said it was a "very proud moment" for the club.

Horton said the award showed just how much the community appreciated the event.

QRL Northern Region Manager Scott Nosworthy said it was a great weekend and Hughenden Bulls – particularly Horton, Mid West League president Les Carter and treasurer Kelly Carter - were well deserving of the honour.

"It certainly makes going to work today easy when you know what the game means for our communities and especially smaller communities like Hughenden," Nosworthy said, adding what the club and volunteers did helped "keep the game alive".

QRL Competitions Manager Dave Maiden said the award was definitely "hard earned and thoroughly deserved".

"Congratulations Vicki and the team," Maiden said.

"It is pleasing to see that the initiative continues to be well received by each community... we look forward to holding the event each year.

"It is hoped the income derived from the event not only helps the rugby league community, but the entire community in general."
