Polly was rescued by local police officers on Tuesday February 5 and is currently in recovery with local wildlife carers Helen and Barry Jackson.
The North West Star spoke with Ms Jackson to see if Polly would make a full recovery.
“Polly came into our care very stressed and cold, we were quite concerned. However she is holding her own body temperature now and is doing very well,” Ms Jackson said.
“She really smelt so last night I sprayed her with some special stuff and rubbed it into her coat, today I will give her a brush to make her look presentable.”
Polly had lost a lot of weight, Ms Jackson felt the baby wallaby’s mother had possibly died and Polly was surviving on her own.
“She is feeding very well off the bottle now and we will build up her strength and weight over the next few weeks,” she said.
“Polly is still a little scared but I think she will settle in. I am hanging her bag in the portacot tonight with the other baby wallaby in our care, so they can interact.
“Once they are friends they can support each other when they are both released back into the wild in the next two to three weeks.”
Ms Jackson wants to remind Cloncurry locals if they see injured or sick wildlife they can take it to the vet, or contact her directly on (07) 4742 1895.
