Winton will host Blackfella Films’ for the ABC political drama series Black Bitch, starring Rachel Griffiths and Deborah Mailman on May 7- 29.
The six-part drama series tells the story of the cunning Prime Minister of Australia, Rachel Anderson, and a charismatic indigenous up-and-coming politician, Alex Irving.
Rachel wants to use Alex to further her own agenda but Alex is wise to her antics and her revenge may break the whole system.
Winton Shire Council mayor, Gavin Baskett, said the series was a great opportunity for Winton and its residents.
"Locals had the opportunity to feature as extras in the series with film crew casting roles on February 13, this created a real buzz around town," Cr Baskett said.
With the television series expected to air to ABC in 2019, Cr Baskett hoped the movie would generate more tourism to the community.
"We hope to one day be Hollywood of the Outback with an ideal goal of having one production shot in town a year," he said.
"That goal was part of our feasibility study for a film studio in Winton which is now in the process of seeking funding.
"We are also looking into it's multipurpose use but it would be there specifically for television and movie productions."
This is not the first time Winton has generated interest in television or film with Outback Opal Hunters filming only 109 kilometres away in Opalton.
"It's second season was one of the most watch shows on the Discovery Channels," Cr Basket said.
"Hopefully moving forward these television series' will generate more tourism for Winton with the prospect of another series/film being shot towards the end of 2019."
