North Queensland-based Senator Susan McDonald said regional airports had been among the hardest hit during the COVID-19 crisis and these Regional Airport Screening Infrastructure grants will ensure Mount Isa could accept an influx of passengers once movement restrictions are eased.
"Mount Isa Airport has done a lot of heavy lifting keeping the region's resources sector operating with charter flights so this funding comes at a crucial time," Senator McDonald said.
"As a regular passenger to and from Mount Isa, I know exactly what this airport means to locals and our economy. During the devastating 2019 North West Queensland floods, Mount Isa Airport was a base for critical relief efforts - highlighting just how important a local airport like this is for many aspects of our community lifestyle and region's future."
Mount Isa Airport General Manager Brendan Cook welcomed the funding, saying it would ensure the airport meets the Australian Government's security requirements for travellers.
"The Federal Government grant will allow us to move ahead quickly to complete important works to the terminal, which will have added benefits of opening up more space in the departures area and improving passenger flow," Mr Cook said.
"This comes at a time when we have been forced to put other projects on hold because of the impact of COVID-19 management measures on our business."
The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications is working with airports to implement the RASI program.
