Launched in 2006, Close the Gap campaign has gained momentum and by 2012 more than 130,000 Australians joined National Close the Gap Day to show their support, to talk about, to spread the word, and to take action to improve Indigenous health.
Close the Gap Day aims to highlight the fact that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have a life expectancy 10-17 years less than white Australians and long-term commitment is needed, with adequate funding and investment in real partnerships to make a difference.
Mount Isa's St Joseph's Catholic Primary School did their bit to raise awareness by hosting a Close the Gap Breakfast.
Indigenous Education Officer Codie Kemp said the initiative for Indigenous health and education was important to address the fact that a healthy breakfast was a positive start to good health.
"We had many parents come along and help out and it has been an extremely successful event," she said.
"This is the first time we have held it and we will continue with it."
