One of the four Siemens SGT-800 gas turbines was fired up to start early phase production using open-cycle generation, with full power production expected to start by mid-2014.
When complete, the station will house a 242MW combined-cycle gas turbine plant, with the capability to operate in open-cycle mode.
In open-cycle mode, a gas turbine is used to produce electricity from the combustion of gas.
Station project director Stephen Ohl said that when complete, a more efficient combined-cycle generation mode would be used.
``The project is all about efficiency - an efficient power-generation process, using natural gas as the fuel source, the generation of additional energy by capturing the heat associated with gas turbine exhausts, and also the smart and operationally efficient manner in which construction is occurring at site, enabling simultaneous construction and operation,'' he said.
Progress at the Leichhardt Power Station site, which will provide 60 MW of back-up OCGT generation, was going well, according to Diamantina Power Station.
