The McKinlay Shire got behind Bravehearts 777 Race to raise awareness for children’s sexual abuse with three community members, McKinlay Shire Council Mayor Belinda Murphy, McKinlay Shire Council executive assistant Linda McNab and Senior Constable Dave McNab taking part in seven marathons over seven days.
Completing 168km each in charity marathons in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Hobart, Canberra, Kingscliff and the Gold Coast the trio said it was a unique experience that has left them exhausted but proud of what they have accomplished.
In total 10 Bravehearts 777 competitors ran seven marathons in seven days to raise awareness for national child protection.
Travelling from one destination to the next and racing in temperatures of minus six degrees the 10 competitors raised more than $150,000.
Cr Murphy said their team, Heart in the North West, had a lot of support from the community that helped get them through the seven days.
“It was extremely challenging,” she said.
“Every day was physically and mentally challenging.”
Cr Murphy said, statistically, one in five children would be sexually assaulted by the age of 18 in Australia.
“Parents need to be very aware this happens to our children,” she said.
“Bravehearts is a very important organisation and we need to get the legal system stronger to protect our children more.”
Senior Constable McNab said, despite injuries and “cankles”, they were honoured to be able to take part in the seven marathons.
“We are really sore but we are really honoured to be a part of it,” he said.
“It is something we will never forget and at the time it was very rewarding.”
Mrs McNab said they had a lot of support from Ironman legend and Bravehearts 777 mentor Guy Andrews who helped push them through the week.
“He was there to call if we needed him and he travelled with us the whole week,” she said.
“He pushed us through the week and he was amazing.”
“We wouldn’t have had such an enjoyable week without him.”
