“There will be more resources and more opportunities than people have ever had before, but you still need to understand the language,” he said.
“What they’ve found from the trial sites is that some people were ill-prepared for going through the process so the Queensland government has funded service providers to talk about it and what it might look like, and how people might prepare for it.”
One of those service providers is Pave the Way which held an information session on the NDIS at Terrace Gardens.
Mr Isitt said there would be significant changes when the NDIS comes in on July 1.
“For the first time, the funding will be attached to the individual seeking the service so they become the buyer of services and that is quite empowering,” he said.
“Historically we’ve funded the service providers, so it’s a wake up call to us providers, we used to provide take-it-or-leave-it services whereas now we’ve got to be a lot more agile and flexible in our thinking.”
Mr Isitt said the needs of clients and carers would differ depending on their circumstances.
“If you are leaving school you’ll want support that is quite different to someone in their 50s. For exampl you might be looking for support to get a job, it may be training or transport to the job, or equipment like a ramp to get to the workplace.”
