Centacare’s senior community worker Jo Frame said the mega playgroups have previously been held in Mount Isa but it was the first of its kind for Cloncurry.
“It falls into the National Families Event and the theme for the week is ‘stronger families are stronger communities’,” Ms Frame said.
“It’s linking everyone together and having a family fun morning.”
The event organised by Centacare North Queensland and Playgroup Queensland is to be held at Florence Clarke Park from 9am to 11am.
The age group of the Mount Isa playgroup was up to five years of age.
However, the Cloncurry playgroup on Friday would be up to eight years.
The reason was to take into the account the size of the smaller community and because organisers wanted to get the schools involved.
The two local playgroups will attend, as will the Curry Kids and the Cloncurry Kindy, but they will be joined by 75 students from St Joseph’s Catholic School and approximately 80 from the Cloncurry State School, Ms Frame said.
Mount Isa playgroup children will also join them on the play date.
One of the benefits of the playgroup would be for services to link programs to the parents who might need it and were unaware of the services the town had on offer.
“Cloncurry has a lot to offer,” Ms Frame said.
“It’s definitely been well received by the community.”
Ms Frame said there will also be a “mindfulness area” for parents to relax.
“We’re looking at getting a pamper area, a number of stalls including Body Shop, arts and crafts stalls.
The combined playgroup sessions will continue but it was “too early to say” how often.
“We will be organising more Mega Playgroups in Cloncurry too, to make it an ongoing event for families within this Cloncurry Shire and surrounding areas,” Ms Frame said.
Centacare had planned the Mega Playgroup since March but the idea had been “flagged” for some time.
