BOM stated that El Niño has ended, and climate indicators in the Pacific have returned to neutral levels.
International models used by the Bureau suggest an increased chance of La Niña forming during winter.
Mount Isa BOM spokesperson, Les Lever, said while La Niña events were associated with increased rainfall, every La Niña was different and it was too early confirm what impact it would have on Queensland if it should form.
“La Niña increases the odds of more widespread, severe weather. While El Niño tends to mean severe weather is more isolated,” he said.
“Already having received 15.6mm for the first two days of June we forecast a wetter than average June, with winter rainfall likely to be above average across most of the mainland.”
The Bureau will continue to monitor the status of the El Niño Southern Oscillation and updates are available fortnightly on BOM’s website.
