It comes as Bob Katter made the news Sunday morning for supposedly being “caught out” saying he does not welcome Muslim immigration to Australia.
This is hardly “new” news – agree with Mr Katter or not – anyone who has even been vaguely following his statements over the years would know that he is on the record saying he does not support Islamic immigration.
If it wasn’t bad enough national media making a mountain out of a molehill, they made matters worse by incorrectly identifying the location of the video.
According to several national media such as Yahoo News, Katter is “bailed up in a NSW pub” on Friday night when the video is shot.
But both the person who shot the video Pon Cho, of the band Thundamentals and Mr Katter were in Mount Isa on Friday ahead of One Night Stand on Saturday where Thundamentals were playing and Mr Katter was attending.
And a close look at the video shows it was shot in the Isa Hotel, which last time we looked was not a “NSW pub”.
Mr Katter said the video was a “stitch up” and called Pon Cho a “bludgerigar” but did not mention it was taken in Mount Isa.
“There is something wrong in the media when you can address this issue formally and intelligently in the Parliament with reason and you get absolutely nothing; and some loud mouth Bludgerigar puts a video out and we get nation-wide publicity,” Mr Katter said.
“I’ll be writing Pauncho (sic) a letter of thanks.”
This is not a new position for Mr Katter.
In November 2016 he said it was “too risky” bringing in new people from North Africa and from the Middle East into this country.
“You say that is anti-Muslim. No, it is not,” he said at the time. I did not mention the biggest Muslim country on earth, which is Indonesia. I did not say anything about Indonesia. They do not have any terrorists in Albania; I did not say anything about Albania, and it is a Muslim country. It is not against Muslims. It is against countries that have a culture and a continuous history of extreme violence.”
