It’s runs through the heart of Queensland’s channel country and during the rainy season the roads can deteriorate quite quickly.
With all the recent rainfall the water is moving from Longreach and Winton through to the channel country.
The Major for the Diamantina Shire Geoff Morton said although it’s not a major flood, it’s a handy flood.
“The peak passed Roseberth Station three days ago and should reach Birdsville today or tomorrow,” Cr Morton said.
“It benefits all three elements – It’s good for the grazing industry and cattle stations, and the Council because although the flooding will damage the roads, its an opportunity to employ more staff.
“And the tourism industry because visitors love to explore the beauty of the land and the birdlife,” he said.
Cr Morton expects the water levels to drop in about one week.
Bedourie to Windorah along the Diamantina Development Road is closed between Bedourie and Barcoo Shire Boundary to all traffic in both directions and long delays are expected.

The road is closed to all traffic in both directions and the Department of Transport and Main Roads website says to expect long delays.
Birdsville Developmental Road at Eyre Developmental Rd turnoff to Barcoo Council Boundary is closed at the Diamantina River, Birdsville.
A spokesperson from the Bureau of Meteorology said the Diamantina River does not have a well defined main channel but consists generally of a series of wide, relatively shallow channels.
“Floods normally develop in the headwaters of the Diamantina River and in its major tributaries, however, flooding may result from heavy rainfall falling in the middle to lower reaches of the catchment around the Diamantina Lakes,” the spokesperson said.
