The ambitious 15-year-old has cut her teeth in the local workforce as a research assistant at the Mount Isa Centre for Rural and Remote Health (MICRRH).
“I just approached them and said I was interested in health and science and asked if they had a job for me,” Ms Leech said.
“I like to finding out more about things and I define myself as an inquisitive person.
“I have always been interested in health. I hope to become a doctor when I finish school and come back and work in Mount Isa,” she said.
The Year 10 Spinifex student played a key role in MICRRH’s latest lead study.
“I got to go around and survey different people in the community about what they knew about lead,” Ms Leech said.
“I have really enjoyed the work and I hope I can keep going with it,” she said.
A MICRRH spokeswoman said the centre is always looking at ways to support students who are interested in rural and remote health.
