The Queensland Ambulance Service field clinic will be housed within the Buchanan Park Pavilion, and will be open from 9am to 9pm Friday to Sunday of Rodeo.
North West Hospital and Health Service Executive Director Nursing and Midwifery and Clinical Services, Michelle Garner said the clinic would be for the use of Rodeo patrons only, and would cater for GP-type conditions and supply basic first aid.
“We’ll have oxygen and IV fluids available, and there’ll be wheelchair and car access if we need to get patients down from the rodeo grounds.
“Coughs and colds, cuts and bruises, can all be treated at the field clinic.
“Of course, if there’s an emergency or accident, that will be dealt with by Queensland Ambulance Service, who are positioned at the rodeo grounds with an ambulance, and they will take the patient to our Emergency Department,” Ms Garner said.
The idea was to treat minor injuries at Buchanan Park to keep the Emergency Department freed up to deal with emergencies, Ms Garner said.
“Last year we had a horrific flu season, the peak of which coincided with Rodeo, so there was considerable strain on our Emergency Department and on our staff; so this year we’re hoping the field clinic will be able to deal with minor cases and leave the Emergency Department and the Hospital free to deal with serious cases.”
