Queensland Rail staff and police officers managed traffic at the level crossing near Hughenden Muttaburra Road, 2km east of town, with a diversion in place.
The incident happened on Tuesday evening when a freight train carrying a load derailed from the tracks but no one was hurt in the crash.
Passengers on the train from Townsville and the return service from Mount Isa on Thursday were shifted to road coaches.
