TC Trevor was downgraded Wednesday from Category 2, but still sustains winds near the centre of 65kph with wind gusts to 95kph and it could hit the NT as a Category 4.
As of Thursday morning it is estimated to be 65km southwest of Weipa and 550km east of Alyangula on Groote Eylandt and is moving west southwest at 7kph.
Tropical Cyclone Trevor is located over the eastern Gulf of Carpentaria and is expected to rapidly intensify to a category 3 cyclone in the next 6 to 12 hours.
Tropical Cyclone Trevor will intensify further as it adopts a more general west-southwest movement across the Gulf of Carpentaria on Thursday and Friday.
It is likely to cross the Northern Territory coast during Saturday as a category 4 severe tropical cyclone.
Destructive winds with gusts in excess of 130 kph may develop between Weipa and Aurukun during Thursday morning as the cyclone rapidly intensifies.
Gales may further extend south to Kowanyama during Thursday night as the cyclone intensifies, and may develop from NT/QLD border to Burketown including Mornington Island later on Friday.
As the cyclone intensifies, a storm tide is expected between Mapoon and Aurukun on Thursday morning's high tides.
The very destructive core of Severe Tropical Cyclone Trevor is forecast to cross the southwestern coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria between Groote Eylandt and Borroloola during Saturday.
Very destructive winds, with gusts to 260 km/h, heavy rainfall and a very dangerous storm tide are expected near the cyclone centre as it approaches and crosses the coast.
