Sam Voss, aged four was diagnosed with Batten's disease which is a one-in-25-million inherited disease that primarily affects the nervous system.
Since then the Voss family has been raising money to help fund the expensive treatments involved.
When students at Spinifex Residential Campus heard of the terrible news they decided to help out.
Spinifex Residential teacher Chely Burke said they were teaching the kids is to be grateful and give something back to the community.
"The kids then came up with an idea to raise funds and choose local charities or those in need," Ms Burke said.
"This year the kids participated in the border bike ride and from that the kids saw that young Sam was at one of the water stops and heard his story and wanted to help him out."
The Voss family was presented with a cheque for $500 from all the kids on September 17.
