OQTA Chair and Blackall-Tambo mayor Andrew Martin said the funding, part of the Queensland Tourism Icons Program 2020, would help fast-track the region's recovery from Covid-19 and lead to the development of new tourism products and experiences.
"The economic and social impact of Covid-19 has been felt across Outback Queensland, with so many communities relying on tourism," Cr Martin said.
"Investment in new infrastructure and facilities through the Growing Tourism Infrastructure Fund will ensure the Outback can compete against other regions vying for domestic travellers while international borders remain closed."
Cr Martin, who was at Longreach's Mitchell Grass Retreat for the announcement, thanked the Premier for the government's ongoing support of Outback tourism.
"The Year of Outback Tourism helped raise the profile of our region and the government's Outback Tourism Infrastructure Fund and Growing Tourism Infrastructure Fund are contributing to a number of fantastic projects right across the Outback," he said.
"With Queensland open for Queenslanders, the vans are back on our roads and operators have seen a marked upswing in bookings across the Outback. OQTA looks forward to working with the government and industry stakeholders to support our local communities and keep our sector viable, sustainable and attractive to visitors seeking a memorable and authentic holiday experience."
Cr Martin also congratulated Mitchell Grass Retreat owners Tanya and David Neal for bringing a new accommodation experience to Longreach.
"Luxury glamping with views for miles, warm hospitality and just a few minutes' drive to some of Longreach's best-loved attractions - Mitchell Grass Retreat is set to become a highlight for travellers to our region," he said.
Mitchell Grass Retreat is scheduled to open in late July.
