TAFE at School provides Year 11 and 12 students in Mount Isa with the opportunity to complete their high school studies and gain a nationally recognised certificate qualification in some of the country's most in-demand industries.
According to the federal government's regional employment projections, a 16.5 per cent growth in jobs to 2024 was predicted for the health care and social assistance industry in outback Queensland.
TAFE at School student Katie Stuart-Russell said she enjoys studying a Certificate II in Health Support Services.
"I decided to enrol in TAFE at School because I wanted to extend my knowledge and skills in the area of health," Ms Stuart-Russell said.
"I love the hands-on approach and the freedom we get to work on our assessments and work at
our own pace, still with the guidance of our teacher," she said.
Ms Stuart-Russell, 16, said the skills she is learning at TAFE Queensland will help her achieve her career goals.
"After I graduate, I aim to continue in the field of health. I am looking into potentially becoming a paramedic or a registered nurse. Whatever I choose, I can see my qualification from TAFE being beneficial," she said.
In Mount Isa, TAFE at School students can enrol in a variety of certificate I to certificate III courses from a range of study areas including health, plumbing, automotive, electrotechnology, engineering and construction.
TAFE at School graduates have used their qualification to go on to further studies, gain an apprenticeship or enter the workforce.
Applications for the 2021 TAFE at School program open on August 17, 2020, interested students should speak to their school's VET coordinator.
