Paramedics were called to the suburb of Miles End around 2.45pm Tuesday after a nine-year-old suffered a leg injury.
Council said the dog owner opened the gate to allow a visitor enter and the dog, a mastiff cross escaped.
The child was cycling home from school when the dog attack happened.
The child cycled the remaining 500m home and was followed by the dog owner who did some basic first aid and called for an ambulance.
The child was taken to hospital under observation.
Mount Isa City Council say the owners of the dog have surrendered it to animal rangers and the animal would now be euthanised.
In Australia, it has been estimated that approximately 2 per cent of the population is bitten by a dog annually, of which 100,000 will require treatment and 13,000 will seek treatment in a hospital.
