Students worked with traditional owners and elders from the community to learn how to cook traditional and contemporary foods.
Students worked alongside the elders in the Hospitality Centre creating dishes such as coconut chicken curry from the Torres Strait and kangaroo kebabs with Roslyn Von Senden, who is a local Kalkadoon elder.
All of the meals were donated to Jangawala, a food kitchen initiative for North West Queensland Indigenous Catholic Social Service.
College principal Kathleen McCarthy said all of the students are involved in the Emerging Leaders program at the College which is open to all Indigenous students and designed to encourage attendance at school, high academic success and community engagement.
"Our Emerging Leaders program is designed to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in all year levels. Students are assigned a mentor for each year they are at the College, who encourages them to come to school everyday, work hard on their studies and importantly, develop leadership skills to share in their community," Ms McCarthy said.
Students are also currently knitting beanies for the needy in the community. This is another great opportunity to engage with the local community."
