The master plan to revamp Florence Clarke Park was adopted in September 2018, following extensive community consultation. The essential build of the $2.06 million water park was completed in March 2020, but COVID-19 and additional works to the pool prevented the facility from opening.
Cloncurry Shire Council Mayor Greg Campbell said the works on the pool were almost complete with the facilities set to open on Tuesday, October 13.
"The pool tiling is done and it has been curing for the last two weeks. At the end of this week (October 2), we will start to fill it up," Cr Campbell said.
"It takes a week to fill it as it needs more than 800,000 litres. The chemical levels will then be balanced in time for the official opening on October 13 at 2pm."
Cr Campbell said the community was extremely excited for the new facilities to open.
"As the project started to take shape the kids would stop and look through the fence and couldn't wait for it to be opened,"
"It is definitely going to improve the livability of Cloncurry in those warmer months."
Cr Campbell said the Florence Clark Park upgrade was funded by the Federal Government, Cloncurry Shire Council and Glencore.
"Glencore has contributed half a million towards the project and making the community more livable," he said.
"It shows that Glencore is more than happy to invest in community infrastructure, especially when they know how much community support it had during the consultation period.
"The project would have gone ahead without their support but it has meant that Council can spend that half a million on other local projects."
Cr Campbell said border closures restricted government delegates from attending the official opening.
"Border closures means we cannot get any federal politicians out here and they put some decent money in for the project," he said.
"With the upcoming election the state government is in caretaker mode, so there is no state politicians coming out. However Senator Susan McDonald will be here and Glencore's Matt O'Neill."
