The BoM says a Watch Zone is in place from the NT/Qld Border to Pormpuraaw as a Tropical Low with winds near the centre of 55kph and wind gusts to 85 kph is 100 kilometres north northeast of NT/Qld Border and 120 kilometres northwest of Mornington Island early on Sunday morning.
The system is moving slowly southeast at 12 kilometres per hour and is expected to continue moving to the east southeast across the southern Gulf of Carpentaria.
The BoM said the environment over this area will support the strengthening of the low, as long as it remains over open water, and the system may develop into a tropical cyclone on Monday morning as it approaches the southeast Gulf coast.
Gales extending out to about 100 kilometres from the centre of the cyclone may develop about coastal and island communities between NT/Qld Border and Pormpuraaw early Monday morning.
Abnormally high tides and large waves are expected about the southeastern Gulf and western Cape York Peninsula as the cyclone approaches the coast. Large waves may produce flooding along the foreshore.
Heavy rainfall that is likely to lead to flash flooding, flooding of low lying areas and riverine flooding will develop about the southeast Gulf of Carpentaria coast and adjacent inland later today and spread to remaining areas of southern Cape York Peninsula on Monday as the low or tropical cyclone moves onto the coast and further inland.
Carpentaria Shire Council is urging residents to check on neighbours.
"Communities that are well connected and supported before a disaster have shown to respond and recover faster following a disaster," Council said.
"Connecting with your neighbours and local networks can make a huge difference to the resilience of your community."
Not much of the rain is expected to get to the Mount Isa region where there is only a max 30% chance of showers in the coming days.
