I hope you all had a safe, relaxing and refreshing Christmas and New Year.
We at Council are ready to hit the ground running this month, with a number of projects carrying over from 2020 that we will continue to diligently work on progressing.
This week we have our Australia Day celebrations.
While COVID has made us revisit how we host Australia Day this year, we still wanted to show our Australia Day spirit, with free entry to Splashez Aquatic Centre, Outback at Isa and the Riversleigh Fossil Centre throughout the day.
There was also a free sausage sizzle at the pool and our favourite puppeteer, Louis Johnson, at Outback at Isa to entertain the kids.We also hosted the Mount Isa Australia Day Awards and citizenship ceremony at the Buchanan Park Entertainment Centre.
The awards recognise and celebrate Mount Isa's hardworking unsung heroes and inspirational role models.
They provide us with a chance for all of us to thank these admirable community champions for the often unappreciated yet critical work they do to make the city a better place in which to live. Our community certainly owes them all a debt of gratitude.
I strongly urge community members, if they haven't already, to fill out the survey we have open to collect people's ideas and suggestions that will assist with the creation of the Mount Isa City Library Master Plan.
The Library has been a Mount Isa institution for almost half a century and the concept Master Plan is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to revamp or improve the facility, to inject some new life into it and ensure it continues to provide locals with high-quality, appropriate services that meet their needs now and well into the future.
You'll find the link to the survey at www.mountisa.qld.gov.au/event-information-and-forms.
There you'll also find the link to download and print out the "Draw Your Ultimate Library" competition entry form for kids aged 5 to 12.
It asks kids to draw a picture of what they would love to see or do at the Library, and the winner will receive a $100 gift voucher from Woolworths Mount Isa.
The survey closes on Sunday, February 7, so be sure to get your responses in before that date.
I would also like to thank the people who came along to our Outback at Isa Master Plan community consultation session last month, or who completed our associated public survey, and provided such useful feedback on how the city's tourism centrepiece can be improved going forward.
The draft Master Plan is in the process of being developed and I look forward to seeing what Stafford Strategy, the consultants we've engaged to put the document together, come back to us with.
Looking forward to a safe and great 2021.
Mount Isa Mayor Danielle Slade
