Qantas was founded in Winton on November 17, 1920 by Hudson Fysh, Paul McGinness and Fergus McMaster as Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Limited
Fast forward a century and current CEO Alan Joyce was in town last week for the unveiling of an Avro Silhouette a cousin of Qantas's first aircraft. the Avro 504K
Mr Joyce joined Qantas board members and executives on their visit to Longreach and Winton as part of the airline's ongoing centenary celebrations.
He visited the Winton Club, where the airline's first board meeting was held in 1921, and which is filled with Qantas memorabilia.
Winton Shire Council said the AVRO Silhouette sign was their initiative to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the first Qantas board meeting and it was placed at Qantas' original airstrip in Winton.
It is located behind the Musical Fence and Diamantina Heritage Truck and Machinery Museum near the Industrial Estate in Winton.
