Mr Cooper was named the Automotive Apprentice of the Year at the 2021 TAFE Queensland Townsville Trade Excellence Awards. Like the Mount Isa equivalent, the annual event recognises exceptional trade students and was held on November 11 at TAFE Queensland's Townsville Trade Training Centre.
"It was a big surprise to be announced as the winner. I was a bit shocked and over the moon," Mr Cooper said.
Mr Cooper recently completed a Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology at the Townsville Trade Training Centre. During his studies, Mr Cooper achieved top results in every training assessment and was always willing to help other students.
"It was pretty good travelling to Townsville for my block training, it makes things a bit exciting when you get to travel away. I met some good people during my studies and I had great teachers too."

Mr Cooper's apprenticeship training equipped him with the skills and knowledge to repair and service heavy mobile plant equipment used widely in the mining, construction, earthmoving and agricultural industries.
At the awards night, Mr Cooper, who works at Atlas Copco Australia, was recognised for often being sent out to the toughest jobs because of his industry knowledge, problem solving skills and ability to work alone.
"The thing I like most about my trade is it keeps my brain quite active. I work in a diagnosing-based trade so it's never the same issue that comes up. There's always something different to learn and there's always some new challenge to work through, which I enjoy," he said.
Mr Cooper received a certificate and trophy as well as a donated industry prize of a plier, socket and spanner set from award sponsor Weigh 'N' Pay.
