Back in May Council awarded a $2.93 million contract to Suez Water to supply and install the smart water meters, replacing all existing 20mm and 25mm mechanical meters at residential properties across Mount Isa.
The smart water meters use magnetic resonance to record water usage and are a lot more accurate than traditional mechanical meters.
Council now said contractors have been installing smart water meters in the Happy Valley area since Monday.

"Affected residents whose water meter is on the list to be changed over to a new smart meter have been notified via letterbox drop," Council said.
"Residents don't need to be home when the meter is changed. The install normally takes around 15 minutes and should cause minimal inconvenience.
Council said the meters were solid state with no moving parts.
"The meter reports its readings every day, automatically, so there will be no need for meter readers to access properties in future," Council said.
"Once all of the meters are installed, a portal will be available to enable property owners to view their own water usage. The system will also provide alarms in the case of a suspected leak."
The $2.95 million project is a joint initiative with $1.77 million in funding from the Queensland Government's 2019-21 Local Government Grants and Subsidy Program, and $1.18 million from Council.
Residents can also downsize water meters if required.
