The ceremony was held at the Cloncurry Shire Council with Robin Dunford, Jane Flores, Upali Adikaram, Amali Peiris and Okitha Adikaram making their pledge in the final step to becoming an Australian citizen.

Mayor Greg Campbell conducted the ceremony and presented each citizens with a certificate and native tree, before celebrating with a morning tea.

Cr Campbell said it was fantastic to see some new Australian citizens choosing to set roots in Cloncurry.

"To use Australian slang it is bonza!" he said.

"To see how diverse Cloncurry has been for 150 years and be upholding that with people from across the globe choosing to call Australia home in Cloncurry is amazing.

"We wish these new citizens all the best as they now have the eligibility to vote, enrol in federal and state electoral registers, serve on a jury and defend Australia should the need arise."

Robin Dunford and Jane Flores relocated to Australia five years ago after working in the Middle East.

"I originally came from London and Jane came from the Philippines and we relocated to Cloncurry for work," Mr Dunford said.

"My brothers are here in Australia and we also like the weather but we wanted to become an Australian citizen because we love it here."

Upali Adikaram, Amali Peiris and Okitha Adikaram relocated to Australia from Sri Lanka in 2013.

"I came here to study and provide Okitha with the best education," Mr Adikaram said.

"We lived in Brisbane before relocating to Cloncurry as I got a job with Transport and Main Roads.

"We love Australia because of the people and think it is a privilege to become and Australian citizen."
