As part of 2020 Naidoc Week the Sydney Opera House will present its sixth annual Dance Rites festival from Monday, bringing together 28 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dance groups in a celebratory digital event with more than 350 performers.
Dance Rites 2020 will include performances from the Mornington Island Dance Group, who performed for the opening of the Opera House in 1973.
This was their first public performance and the Mornington Island Dancers have become an important part of Mornington's cultural identity, celebrating Indigenous culture through traditional dance and song.
Since 1973 they have conducted more than 20 overseas tours including performances in Italy, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the United States, United Kingdom, India and Sweden and most recently performed at the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair 2020.
The Mornington Island dancers will perform three dances in the heats which will showcase traditional and wildcard dances before the final on November 21.
The event will be shown live online here.
