The Mount Isa Rotary Club will host the movie to raise funds for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, which works with the World Health Organisation, UNICEF, and the US Centres for Disease Control to rid the last few remaining countries in the world of Polio.
The Gold Class style experience will begin with nibblies and drinks tonight from 6.30 pm followed by the movie commencing at 730pm. The Monuments Men stars George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman and Australia’s own Cate Blanchett.
It is based on the true story of a treasure hunt by a group of museum directors, curators and art historians sent into Germany towards the end of World War 2 to rescue artworks taken by the Nazis and to return them to their rightful owners. The movie has been described as an action drama as well as a comedy drama and will have something for everyone.
The funds raised from the movie screening will go towards eradicating polio in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. In 1988 polio was endemic in more that 125 countries – now it is endemic in only four countries and in March it is expected that India will be declared polio free. In 1980 the world was declared free of small pox after a worldwide vaccination program. Rotary International is working towards achieving a world that is also free of polio. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased in advance at the cinema or on the night. You can also get tickets from Isa News either in Miles Street or at the Colonial Shopping Centre.
