For the first time, year 7 students are now the first year of high school in Queensland.
Spinifex State College principal Denise Kostowski said the school had been preparing for the new phase for a couple of years, ensuring a smooth changeover.
“We have recruited and welcomed primary school teachers to join our staff, we have reviewed and written curriculum programs to take advantage of the specialised facilities that we have in our school, and we have run an extensive transition program with students to ensure that they are familiar with our school, our staff and our school expectations,” she said.
Mrs Kostowski said the year 7s felt at home on their first day of high school.
“Our first day has been very successful with students leaving having met their core teacher for the year, learnt about their timetabled program and having completed their first two lessons of work.”
She admitted there were some nervous students and parents but was confident they would feel right at home.
“It was lovely to see so many excited students and parents attend parade [yesterday] morning,” she said.
