A $3.8m funding partnership between Council, the Federal and State Governments and Telstra to replace the current radio transmission network with 100km of fibre optic cable between Doomadgee and Burketown was finalised last week.
Burke Shire Mayor Ernie Camp said the fibre optic link would turn the region into a “high-tech oasis”.
The high-speed fibre optic cable will allow businesses and residents to upgrade to ADSL2+ fixed broadband or connect directly to the fibre. The project will also deliver Telstra’s high-speed 4GX mobile network and see the installation of Wi-Fi hotspots in Burketown.
Construction is expected to begin in May and be completed by October this year.
