Five Year 3 students read their letters during Tuesday’s council meeting held in the community precinct. 

“Cloncurry must have a fun water park because everyone will die of thirst,” student Latarnia Sollitt said in a carrying voice that could almost rival Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter’s. 

Ryley Macnamara said; “Cloncurry definitely needs a water park because it is so hot we could die.” 

Acting mayor Jane McMillan had encouraged the students to attend the meeting after reading their letters that were published by The North West Star.

During the meeting Cr McMillan asked what features they would want in the park if it was to be built. 

Water guns and big slides were a must, according to the students. 

“I think it’s a great idea as well,” Cr McMillan said, suggesting an extension of the existing features at the town pool, but warned that the junior lobbyists might no longer be children by the time the project was completed.

Cr Keith Douglas said that he would like to see a giant thermometer built in Cloncurry to attract tourists. 

Perhaps the thermometer could combine with the water park so that when the temperature increased to a certain level, the thermometer overflowed like a shower, Cr Douglas said. 

Cr Colin Ferguson said if the temperature was hot enough he would go under the flowing water himself. 

Outgoing councillor Bob McDonald said he had grandchildren living out on stations that would agree on having a water park. 

“Have you all learned to swim?” he asked. When the children said yes, Cr McDonald continued, “that’s great...you can all jump in the deep end and you’re all fine.”
