I can’t believe February is almost over and already there has been quite a bit of change the council and community have had to work through.
We have a number of ongoing projects ready to begin construction, primarily stormwater drainage and the road upgrade in Sheaffe Street, stormwater drainage works on the Eastern side of town and upgrades at the saleyards.
These projects have been in the system for some time, so it will be good to get them completed. We will also see work on the footpaths of Ramsay Street by Telstra to rectify work to their assets that were overlooked during the Ramsay Street upgrade, some eighteen months ago.
There is also quite a shift in the operation of the dump. Council has not been fully compliant with the environmental requirements set by the Government Department of Environment and Heritage Protection. To avoid serious fines and penalties we had to act immediately. Having the dump manned and closed at times is a change and I thank everyone for their patience and understanding.
Once these old projects are completed we can fully focus on the objectives I have for Council, primarily, maintaining and upgrading our sewer system, ensuring water infrastructure meets the community’s expectation and ensuring town and rural roads are well maintained.
These are basics that should not fall through the cracks. In addition to these fundamental responsibilities of Council, I want to foster opportunities for economic diversity and growth. We can build on the great foundation we have with beef and mining industry to further explore options around biofuel, tourism and agriculture.
Council has recently welcomed the announcement from the Department of the Works for Queensland funding in which Cloncurry received $1.42 Million, that will be put to good use to improve our infrastructure.
Now is an opportunity to ask people travelling the Flinders Highway to take extra care, we are seeing an increase in truck numbers carting freight that has previously been on rail. Whether you are driving a truck or car, please be patient, it is important that all road users get to their destination safely.
Cheers until next time.
Mayor Greg Campbell,
Cloncurry Shire Council
