President of the Landcare group, Mark Van Ryt said they cleaned up the last two kilometres of the road to East Leichhardt Dam.
“Our effort resulted in one full trailer of old bottles and cans,” Mr Van Ryt said.
“Over the last three years we have now cleaned the whole nine kilometres of road to East Leichhardt Dam. From the Barkly Highway all the way down to the boat ramp.”
In 2016 Landcare cleaned up one kilometre of the road and collected one trailer load, in the second year they cleaned a massive six kilometres of track and three trailer loads of rubbish.
Mr Van Ryt would like to thank the twelve volunteers who tidied up the area while walking along the track.
“We need more help from like-minded, motivated volunteers, and it was nice that a young lady named Anna came up from her camp to help pick up broken glass.”
Lunch was provided at the lake to provide a break and a feed the busy workers.
“After lunch we all went home happy to have achieved something positive for our town and country,” Mr Van Ryt said.
“Next year we'll camp overnight at the lake and make a start on each of the camping sites.
“It is important we continue to raise awareness among the public of the need to take home all their rubbish,” he said.
Mr Van Ryt said his goal is to slowly get the area cleaned up and install a sign deterring people from dumping their rubbish.
