Males might be thought of as the tougher sex but Australian men are dying six years earlier on average than women.
Statistics provided by the Australian men’s health forum below suggest that men aged under 75 are twice as likely than women to die from preventable causes.
They are 30 per cent more likely to die from cancer and more likely to die from illnesses related to work environment.
Data also shows that 95 per cent of all people who die at work are men, with suicide rates higher for men than women.
North Queensland’s Glencore chief operating officer Matt O’Neill said Movember was an opportunity for people to discuss men’s health.
“By supporting Movember on site, our people aren't just raising money for the cause, but building a platform for our people to show support for each other, have some open conversations and start breaking down the stigma many men associate with getting help they need to love their healthiest, happiest lives,” he said.
"Many men die too young and on average six years younger than women for reasons that could have been prevented.
“Prevention can be as simple as having a conservation, listening to a mate of regularly checking in with your doctor."
Movember, a month-long awareness campaign, was started by the Movember Foundation, which was set up to promote men’s physical and mental health, also raising funds to support patients with prostate and testicular cancer.
Mr O’Neill said funds raised from barbecues hosted by the company would be given to the Mount Isa Men’s Shed.
He said Glencore had also supported prostate cancer awareness month in September by painting equipment blue.
This was done last year too, with staff – including women – wearing blue shirts for the cause.
The positive contributions men make are also being celebrated today as part of International Men’s Day.
