Mayor Joyce McCulloch says the roads were in dire need of a new bitumen surface, as the old surfaces had significantly degraded in quality.
She says the new footpath will enable for easier and safer access for pedestrians and cyclists travelling between North Street and North Street East.
“The roads were in very poor condition and needed to be replaced. Once they’ve been properly sealed, the area will look much more visually appealing and safer for all road users,” Cr McCulloch said.
Council road crews began working on the streets on Thursday, November 22, removing the old bitumen, laying down new road base and compacting the road base in preparation for the bitumen sealing work.
They also installed the new fence along North Street, and finished up the work earlier this week.
“We’re also carrying out regular dust-suppression activities on the compacted road base before the streets are sealed, so people who live nearby shouldn’t be overly affected by dust while the work is going on,” Cr McCulloch said.
The bitumen sealing work will be carried out by Council’s contractors and started on Thursday, December 6, with an expected completion of later that day or Friday, December 7.
Before starting the project, Council carried out a letterbox drop to residents in the immediate area, advising them of the impending work.
