Located near The Boss Shop, the work will create a total of 22 new parking spaces, and is valued at $90,000 which was funded through the Mount Isa City Council's capital works program.
MICC director of engineering Emilio Cianetti said the new work was being carried out due to an overflow of vehicles parking in certain areas across the city.
"The work will upgrade user convenience, as well as safety, which will impact on through traffic interaction," Mr Cianetti said.
"It will be carried out in stages, so as to not hinder or restrict existing car parking in this area.
"There may be minor traffic condition changes that are localised to the works’ immediate area, however, the noise generation will be low."
The new car parks are expected to be complete in three weeks after commencement.
The median conversion follows the recent replacement and upgrade of the water mains, and the replacement of a sewer trunk main, and is part of Council’s staged review and upgrade of parking facilities throughout the city.
"There should be minimal to no inconvenience to households and businesses in this area is expected," Mr Cianetti said.
MICC have invested $2.635 million this financial year on road surfacing, upgrades and rural road works.
These include 23rd Avenue, Fifth Avenue, Carina Street, North Street, the Isa Street Bridge (which is due to start in April), Industrial Avenue, Sunset Drive and Fisher Drive, the Spinifex State College Senior Campus car park in Abel Smith Parade and works around the city.
"So far this financial year, $345,000 has been invested in patching, small pavement repairs, line marking and footpath repairs, with an additional $1.52 million available for the remainder of the financial year, including $300,000 for resealing work," he said.
