RSL North Queensland District President Bill Whitburn said members had stopped meeting in the building at 15 Scarr Street around two years ago, after its condition had deteriorated to the point that it was not safe.
In June last year, the Cloncurry RSL Sub Branch entered into a shared services arrangement with the Cloncurry Bowls Club to use its facilities.
"The members have been meeting at the Bowls Club since then and that arrangement has worked well," Mr Whitburn said.
"Services to members and regular meetings will not be affected at all by the demolition of the old building, which was in an extreme state of disrepair."
The building had damage to the roof and walls, multiple broken fixtures and fittings (including smashed windows and doors), and power and air conditioning infrastructure had failed.
There was also a large amount of lead paint and friable asbestos within the roof, wall panels and floor tiles, which had been exposed.
Mr Whitburn said a thorough assessment was done on the building before RSL Queensland made the decision to demolish it to prevent further dilapidation and risk of contamination to the surrounding community.
He said a decision had not yet been made as to what would be done with the land once it had been cleared.
