The small town in the heart of the Diamantina region is used to being isolated but now is completely cut off with a major flood warning on the Eyre Creek, which is fed from the Georgina and Burke rivers.
Upstream water from big rains caused by Tropical Cyclone Trevor are gradually making their way south through the Channel Country and Bedourie's levee bank system is working overtime as waters rise in Eyre Creek.
The Georgina River at Marion Downs peaked at 6.35 metres on Sunday 31 March (higher than the December 2000 flood) and is currently at 5.42 metres and falling slowly, with major flooding. The river level is expected to remain above the major flood level (5m) for the next few days.
The Eyre Creek is expected to rise throughout this week as floodwaters arrive from the Georgina and Hamilton Rivers.
The Eyre Creek at Bedourie is currently at 5.28 metres and rising slowly with major flood levels. River levels are expected to peak just below the January 2009 flood of 5.38m at Bedourie during the next few days
Eyre Creek at Glengyle is currently at 4.80 metres and rising with major flooding. A major flood peak is expected during the next few days.
There already have been food drops to Bedourie by air.
Now those stranded in town have been invited to an event at the community hall this Friday to "guess the height of the flood peak".
As of Monday there is no road open in or out of the town, which is the administrative centre of the Diamantina Shire.
From the north the Diamantina Development Road from Boulia is closed due to water 0.7m over at Deep Creek.
From the east the Bedourie / Windorah Road and Diamantina Development Road are closed while from the south the Eyre Developmental Road from Birdsville is closed to all vehicles due to flooding at Glengyle.
Birdsville to Windorah is open with caution but there is no access from the south via the Birdsville Track.
River level rises continue in the lower Diamantina River with minor flooding likely at Birdsville during the week.
No significant rainfall has been recorded over the last few days and very little rainfall is expected across the catchment area during the week.
